File-R. A tool to rename and backup your files by date created.

There are times when you may wish to organise your files simply by the date created. Right clicking and sorting is one approach but what if you want to permanently index a back copy of your files by date created? Some applications of using this tool:

  • Organise your photos and images in a directory, to show a linear story through time in pictures. For example, taking your photos and building an album that shows a history of changes.

  • Merge photos into chronological order from several cameras taken at a photography event, by copying the photos into a single folder and using this tool. *

  • Research notes, text documents (word/pdf) and spreadsheets (excel) that need to show how you went from one document to the next through time.

  • Put media files and media downloads into downloaded / episodic order.

  • Put speech files that have been recorded on several audio recording devices into chronological order. *

  • Professional fields such as Architecture (stages of DXF/DWF evolutionary designs) and Medicine (DICOM MRI scans etc) may find this tool useful in cataloguing a backup of changes that occured to a folder of data over time.

* providing that each of the equipment has been set with synchronised time.

This is just some of the reasons why File-R, which works on any filetype given, is useful.

How it works.

You load a folder of your files with the open button and it will show you the files in two lists, both by original filenames and by date, in date created order. If you wish to view any file, you may double click on it from the list and it will open using the windows application associated with it (e.g. doc files may opens with Word). You can then back up the files in date created order to a folder of your choice with the copy files button. Example below; file 001.jpg becomes 2009-03-13-20-11-429.jpg. 2009-03-13 is the year, month and day. 20-11-429 is the hour, minute and millisecond on the file's timestamp. That's it!

Platforms

Windows Vista Compatible File-R v1.0 uses Microsoft Dot.Net 1.1 which should be a part of most Windows Installations. The software has been tested on Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 Beta (pictured above). If you do not have Dot.Net 1.1 it will inform you, in which a quick google will assist in finding an appropriate dot.Net installer (e.g. 3.5). If you do not have administrative priveliges, do not use the windows installer below, use the zip file with just the executable instead.

Why is it called File-R?

Because we wish to Rename or Reorder files Rapidly (Arr). Future revisions may be more capable depending on demand and costs. Send us a message if you have any comments/feedback/requests.

Why is it Free?

A simple question (such as how to rename my files into date created order) deserves a simple answer (because we can, so here you go!).

Anything else I should know? (short FAQ)

  • Yes. Firstly if there are several files in a folder that just so happen to be written with the same identical creation date and timestamp information, right down to the milliseconds (see above picture, several end in 429 etc.), File-R will assume that these should be then placed in a further alphabetical system, so it will append a 4 digit number that increments to the end of this. If you have more than 9999 files with the same timestamp down to the millisecond, this freeware application is not for you.

  • If the files/photos you have taken have been re-created from scratch from a secondary source then you will probably not have the original timestamps! This is especially the case when grabbing files off the web.

  • If you don't want to make a backup copy, and only want all the files renamed in date created order, simply click to make the backup copy and delete the originals afterwards at your own discretion. Hey this software is free, that's all folks!
